Sports Photography With The Canon RF100-500 f4.5-f7.1

The Canon RF 100 – 500, F4.5 to 7.1 is a lens to rule them all, if you have enough light. It’s a lens I like to travel with as it’s fairly compact, extremely versatile, and it’s great for wildlife photography as well as landscapes and other general photography.
Now, I’ve been serious about using this lens for professional sports for quite a while, but I’ve had to wait patiently for the right moment to use this. Instead of my usual set up, which is the canon 400mm f 2.8, along with the RF 70 to 200 on a second camera. I generally switch between two cameras during play, but the convenience of having one lens so I can go from 100mm to 500mm focal length is a bit of a luxury, as well as a 1.6x crop mode on the R5 that produces a huge 800mm focal distance.
And I’m still getting 17 megapixel images. The lens has optical stabilisation as well as in-body stabilisation on the new R series cameras that allows for steady and sharp handheld shooting. But of course, there are some fairly major drawbacks and caveats, one being the f 7.1 aperture when zoomed out, that is a major handicap when working in low light situations, and it’s why I generally use the much bigger and heavier 400 millimeter f 2.8 lens, along with the 70 to 200 f 2.8.
That combination never seems to fail, however, it can be a lot of extra work carrying that gear around. So when I had the chance to use 100 to 500 in a real world professional sports environment, I was really keen to test 100 to 500 lens out again to see what it can do, and also compare it against my usual setup.
Let’s see how it performed.
