Can The Canon RF100-500 Lens Be Used For Pro Sports Photography?

The Canon RF100-500 f4.5-7.1is an amazingly compact telephoto zoom lens to rule them all, if you have enough light! It’s a lens I’ve travelled with quite a lot as it’s reasonably lightweight, you can pack this in your carry on luggage, it’s extremely versatile and it’s great for wildlife photography as well as for landscapes.

It’s also great for video because of the optical stabilisation system and generally when I’m travelling, low light situations aren’t that much of an issue as I don’t always have to use extreme shutter speeds for every subject like I have to for sports photography. But, of course there are some fairly major drawbacks and caveats, one being the f7.1 aperture when zoomed out at 500mm.

That’s a major handicap when working in low light situations, and it’s generally why i don’t use this lens very often for professional sports coverage. I’m usually using the much bigger and heavier 400mm f2.8 lens along with the 70-200 f2.8.

That combination performs so well out in the field, despite me having to frequently swap cameras, it can also be a lot of effort carrying all that extra gear around. But can the RF100-500 be used for professional sports?

The simple answer is yes it can!
